To get the kind of sporty performance worthy of a “supersport” model, the YZF-R15 is fitted with a 6-speed transmission. The aim of this transmission is to provide sprite, agile running performance in all kinds of riding situations, from sporty riding out in the countryside to long-distance riding, riding in the city and tandem riding. It helps bring out the best of the character of this model’s 4-valve engine and provide excellent power feeling in the mid- to high-speed range and good acceleration performance. Also, the gear ratios for 3rd and 4th gear have been set as especially close ratios (small difference in gear ratio) to let the rider enjoy effective gear changes when accelerating from the mid- to high-speed range. And, the 6th gear is what is known as an over-top gear that contributes to outstanding fuel economy in high-speed cruising.
