Looking at a motorcycle means the rider is being looked at as well. In designing the styling of Yamaha motorcycles the designers keep an awareness of the rider as well as the machine, and how they are seen by the people around them. This is an awareness that is born of a design approach that seeks to give visual expression to performance.

Under the key concept phrase of "The macho Street Machine" the design development stressed an optimum fusion of the model's various technical elements. The design elements chosen were (1) a macho silhouette, (2) macho body parts and (3) a macho chassis. The design development team called this the "Triple macho concept" and they worked to find a high-level balance of the three. "macho silhouette" describes the machine silhouette (side view) with mass concentrated around the central engine with no excess spaces or gaps. "macho body parts" describes the surface appearance of the body with its clear contours and light and dark portions and the somehow rough and rugged expression it has. "macho chassis" describes the role of the large-diameter front fork and the wide rear tire in emphasizing the impression of strength and heightening the macho image of the machine. The components designed in line with the "Triple macho concept" described in (1) to (3) above gives direct expression to the machine's performance and the distinctive muscular image. Furthermore, unlike conventional macho style bikes in the Indian market, the body of the FZ16 is character-ized by a concentration of mass toward the center of the machine.
